Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself, Unless They Are (fill in the blank)

But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

(Matthew 22:34-40)

Was there anyone that Jesus didn’t love? Was there anyone that He was unwilling to associate with?

Who did Jesus consider to be his neighbor? Did He exclude anyone from that group?

Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself

I often ask the same questions about myself:

  • Who am I having difficulty loving?

  • Is there anyone I am unwilling to associate with because of their personality, class, culture, customs, religion?

  • Do I treat everyone as if they were my neighbor?

  • I say  that I love my neighbor, but do my actions prove otherwise?

  • Could it be that sometimes I fall prey to the worldly philosophy of “Love thy neighbor as thyself, unless they are (fill in the blank)?”

As a Christian—one who strives to follow Christ—I desire to rid my heart of worldly philosophies and return to the pure teachings of Jesus Christ.

Christ placed no conditions on who He loved, who He associated with, who He called his neighbor.

We will find more peace and happiness in our lives when we follow His lead.

Do you ever find yourself “loving your neighbor, unless they are (fill in the blank)”? How might we as Christians overcome this worldly mentality and return to the pure doctrine of Jesus: “Love thy neighbor as thyself”?
